In industrial manufacturing, packaging, logistics sorting, and outbound shipping applications, cartons often need two identical product labels, shipping labels, or traceability labels applied to both ends or both sides. This is essential for inbound and outbound warehouse management, barcode scanning, logistics identification, and transportation tracking.

Compared with standard cartons, long-format cartons are more likely to shift during conveying, and the labeling positions on both ends are farther apart. This places higher requirements on the synchronization control, positioning stability, and data association capability of the labeling equipment.

Traditional manual labeling is inefficient and cannot ensure consistent label placement on both ends. A single labeling machine also has difficulty completing multi-position print-and-apply labeling within one production cycle. Therefore, the customer required a fully automatic carton sealing and print-and-apply labeling system capable of automatic carton sealing, transfer and orientation, stopper positioning, dual-machine synchronized labeling, and downstream inspection, in order to improve labeling quality and packaging efficiency.

This project uses two Cotao H400A High Printer Applicators as a dual-machine synchronized system to complete automatic print-and-apply on both sides of the cartons.

After the carton is automatically sealed on both the top and bottom center seam, a pushing and transfer mechanism smoothly transfers the carton to the labeling conveyor section, ensuring seamless connection between different workstations. During the entire conveying process, the production rhythm remains stable, allowing the carton to enter the labeling station at the correct position.

A pneumatic stopper is lowered in advance. When the carton reaches the labeling position, the system uses a side-clamping mechanism to secure the carton in place, keeping it stable during label application and preventing displacement caused by carton length or conveying inertia. Stable clamping and positioning provide a reliable basis for synchronized labeling on both ends and also improve label placement consistency.

The two Cotao H400A High Printer Applicators are arranged respectively for the labeling positions at both ends of the carton. The machines can operate in either print-and-apply mode or print-then-apply mode. Based on data sent from the host system, each applicator prints the required label in real time and applies it once the carton is in position.

Through an industrial switch, host computer, and PLC control system, the solution enables data communication and motion synchronization. This allows the two labeling machines to receive corresponding label data separately while keeping printing and labeling actions synchronized.

In the downstream process, a scanning and verification system can be configured to identify and check the applied label content. Cartons that pass inspection continue to the next workstation or designated position for outbound processing. This closed-loop verification mechanism effectively reduces the risks of incorrect labels, missing labels, and barcode reading failures, while improving the accuracy of carton label information and the reliability of downstream logistics traceability.

Through the implementation of this solution, the customer successfully upgraded the dual-side labeling process for the cartons. From conveying, transferring, and clamping to printing and labeling, the entire process is completed automatically, reducing manual intervention and improving overall operational efficiency.

In actual application, the system delivers the following results:

  1. Automatic print-and-apply labeling on both sides of the long-format cartons.
  2. Improved label position consistency and reduced deviation caused by manual labeling.
  3. Enhanced labeling stability through pneumatic positioning, preventing carton movement during label application.
  4. Higher labeling efficiency through synchronized operation of two Cotao H400A High Printer Applicators.
  5. Automatic linkage of carton sealing, pushing, stopping, clamping, and labeling through PLC control.
  6. Improved label content accuracy and stronger barcode traceability through downstream scanning and verification.
  7. Integration of carton identification into the automated production line, improving overall production management efficiency.

With the rapid development of smart manufacturing and automated logistics, this dual-machine synchronized solution based on the Cotao H400A High Printer Applicator provides an efficient, stable, and highly integrable approach for multi-position labeling of the cartons. It not only improves labeling efficiency, but also helps enterprises build a more reliable carton identification and traceability system.
